One of my biggest passions is traveling the world, and so far I have been to sixty countries on six continents. People always ask me how I can afford to travel the world, and my response is that it starts with the mentality. It must be ingrained in your mindset that it is vital to experience different cultures and witness the beautiful places on our planet. Others may try to convince you that you can’t afford to travel. I’m here to tell you that you can’t afford not to.
1) You should take one overseas vacation each year.
This will be not only be an exciting adventure that you look forward to, but it makes you a more cultured, confident person, no matter what your lifestyle is. If you are single, it is a wonderful way to enjoy the freedom to see new places and possibly meet potential partners all over the world. If you are in a relationship, it can be a way to bring you closer with your significant other through a shared experience.
2) Join a rewards program.
Take advantage of airline and hotel rewards programs by signing up and understanding all of their rules. Loyalty definitely pays off in the long run. I am a member of Delta Skymiles, and I fly overseas for free every year so find a program that works for you and start reaping the benefits.
3) Meet fellow travelers by staying at travel hostels.
If you are looking for the best places to stay to meet new friends, you should definitely look up the best travel hostels in the city you are traveling to. Although they may not have the luxuries of a hotel, they are really inexpensive, and the best ones are generally very well kept and have their own bar and common area to meet fellow world travelers. You usually get a young staff that really understands the hip nightlife and best food options in the city. I have met friends all over the world at these places, and meeting fellow adventurers inspires me to seek out new places to see.
4) Do a study abroad program.
I think one of the best cultural experiences you can experience is a study abroad program. Insert your own joke here. Seriously speaking, I did a program in China when I was in law school, and it was one of the most enriching experiences of my life. You get to immerse yourself in a new culture by attending one of their schools, and through the program, you experience all types of local activities organized by experts. This is the ultimate learning experience beyond what they teach in a traditional classroom setting.
